The Electrical Engineering Study Program studies the utilization of science, technology, and problem-solving skills in designing, constructing, and maintaining products, services, and information systems. Electrical Engineering has been in use since the late 19th century. It is nonetheless used to refer to contemporary fields such as Robotics, Electronics, Biomedical Engineering (Medical Electronics), Multimedia Telecommunications, and Computer Engineering. The Electrical Engineering Study Program (est. in 1982) of the Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University is under the Faculty of Engineering. It offers an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Sarjana Teknik or shortened as ST). The department was originally a vocational education unit called Electronic Education Institute (Lembaga Pendidikan Elektronika or LPE in Bahasa Indonesia), founded in 1973.

What Students Learn in the Electrical Engineering Study Program

The curriculum is designed to support the acquisition of competence in Electrical Engineering, which includes electronics, controls, power systems, computer, telecommunications, with emphasis on multimedia telecommunications, biomedical engineering (medical electronics), and industrial control.

Specifically supported work areas include the following :

  1. Multimedia Telecommunication, such as the telecommunication industry, multimedia system design, digital imaging, and video-imaging industry.
  2. Bio-media Engineering, such as medical-electronic equipment industry, and medical support systems.
  3. Industrial Controls, such as production systems automation, electronic data processing, instrumentation, conversion and power generation, and robotics.


Dual Program: a major in Electrical Engineering combined with a minor in Communication Science, Psychology, and Business

A Major in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Communication Science: In addition to being knowledgeable in Electrical Engineering, graduates will also have the ability to lobby and negotiate, conduct public speaking, and other related skills.

A Major in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Psychology: In addition to being knowledgeable in Electrical Engineering, graduates will also have the knowledge and skills in industrial and organizational psychology.

A Major in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Business: In addition to being knowledgeable in Electrical Engineering, graduates will also have the knowledge and skills in marketing management and human resources. 

Advantages of Electrical Engineering Study Program

The Electrical Engineering Study Program includes a quality study program with an accreditation rating of B, from the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi or BAN-PT in Bahasa Indonesia). The Study Program’s area of concentration is on Medical Electronics, which is only offered in a small number of major electrical engineering universities.


It has educational partnerships with overseas universities in the form of exchange staff, students, and research. In addition, there exists an opportunity for students to receive a double degree and gain work experience of at least 1 year in the Netherlands. The Electrical Engineering Study Program is currently pioneering the application of Student Centered Learning (with the support of a grant from the government called Hibah Kompetisi Institusi Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi or PHKI DIKTI), by applying Information and Communication Technology to support the teaching and learning process. The students of this course are actively encouraged by the program to participate in national competitions, such as the National Robot Contest (Kontes Robot Nasional or KRI-KRCI), Indonesia Rocket Competition (Kompetisi Roket Indonesia or KORINDO), National Electro-engineering Creation Contest (Lomba Cipta Elektro-teknik Nasional or LCEN), etc.

In Electrical Engineering Study Program, what ever level students are located, they are always appreciated as young adults. Students are assured that everything on campus is a small model of life, which must be faced as serious as the real life, but with plenty of space to err and learn from experience. Thus, students can increase their creativity and develop to reach personal maturity.
