The idea of establishing a Catholic Higher Education Foundation had started in World War I around 1914-1919. At that time, many HBS graduates (Hogere Burger School/High School), cannot continue their tertiary education in the Netherlands, due to circumstances and transportation barriers to Europe.
Then the 1950s became known as the “Catholic College Revival Era”. In 1958, after the establishment of several Catholic universities in cities in Indonesia, Mgr. J. Klooster, CM as the Bishop of Surabaya established the Widya Mandala Foundation.
Widya Mandala comes from ancient Javanese; Mandala means a building or place in a sense that is not only physical and Widya means scholar. So Widya Mandala can be interpreted as a place of education for wise and successful people (graduates). Some people also simplify the meaning of Widya Mandala as a place or place of knowledge.
Yayasan Widya Mandala Surabaya aims to participate in educating the life of the Indonesian nation by organizing, maintaining, and developing higher education institutions so that Indonesian people are formed who are moral, educated and highly knowledgeable.
Tanggal 20 September 1960 ditetapkan sebagai hari jadi Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya (UKWMS). Pada saat didirikan, UKWMS hanya memiliki satu fakultas dan berlokasi di Jl. Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya. Kini ada sepuluh fakultas dan program Pascasarjana (S2 dan S3). Kegiatan Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya dituangkan dalam bentuk Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang terdiri atas Pendidikan dan Pengajaran, Penelitian, dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat.
Sebagai salah satu universitas swasta tertua di Surabaya, UKWMS memiliki lima gedung kampus untuk menunjang proses belajar mengajar. Kampus utama berlokasi di Jl. Dinoyo 42-44, dihuni oleh Fakultas Bisnis, Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi, dan Fakultas Teknologi Pertanian. Kampus kedua berlokasi di Jl. Kalijudan 37, dihuni oleh Fakultas Teknik dan Fakultas Keguruan & Ilmu Pendidikan. Kampus ketiga berlokasi di Jalan Dinoyo 48, dihuni oleh Sekolah Pascasarjana. Gedung kampus terbaru yang diresmikan pada tahun 2013 adalah Integrated and Comprehensive Health Sciences Campus dan berlokasi di Jl. Raya Kalisari Selatan 1 Pakuwon City. Mengusung metode pembelajaran terpadu lintas ilmu kesehatan; di kampus keempat ini terdapat Fakultas Farmasi, Fakultas Psikologi, Fakultas Keperawatan, Fakultas Filsafat, dan Fakultas Kedokteran. Lalu, kampus kelima ada di Jl. Manggis 15-17 Madiun.

Thus, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (UKWMS) is committed to having a positive impact on improving the lives of others, through the continuous development of innovative and creative learning processes by utilizing developments in science, information and communication technology, among others alternative learning, leadership learning, workplace learning, creativity learning, learning to serve, learning to care, dan learning across cultures. This is done to prepare students to become global citizens in the 21st century.
Through the university's motto "Non Scholae Sed Vitae Discimus", which means "We learn not for the sake of knowledge alone, but also for life. Educating is not only aimed at filling the brain with various knowledge, but aims to form a complete human person. Through development programs on and off campus, UKWMS students are facilitated to grow into mature human beings who are mature in faith, character, skills, and intellect, and live out the core values of UKWMS namely Care, Commit, Enthusiasm (PeKA).

UKWMS adalah universitas yang terakreditasi UNGGUL dari Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi. Melalui Webometrics tahun 2026, UKWMS berhasil berada di Peringkat 1 Kampus Swasta Surabaya, Peringkat 3 Kampus Swasta Jawa Timur, lalu peringkat 13 Swasta Nasional, dan Peringkat 61 Nasional Universitas Terbaik di Indonesia.
